It broke out at Light Brothers in Lewes at about 9.30pm in the evening. Four fire engines from Lewes, Preston Circus in Brighton and Uckfield were at the scene along with a specialist national resilience waste fire tactical adviser.

The company said “a small fire” was detected on its thermal imaging CCTV camera and its emergency procedure was implemented.

“Thanks to the fast response by staff the fire was quickly contained and there have been no injuries or damage to machinery,” it said.

“A full internal review into the cause of the fire is ongoing.”

East Sussex Fire and Rescue service said the fire was accidental.

A spokeswoman said: “A fire prevention plan and measures were in place to allow firefighters to assist on-site staff who effectively extinguished the fire within an hour.”

Thursday’s fire was not the first at the site has caught. In April 2021, 250 tonnes of scrap metal were ablaze with smoke billowing into the sky and visible across the South Downs. The depot also caught fire in 2017.
