The Odeon cinema, in West Street, Brighton, has approached its landlord to make changes to the building.

A planning application has now been submitted to Brighton and Hove City Council.

If approved, the dated facades and signs could be replaced with new stone-coloured panels and new illuminated signage.

In response to the news, Brighton residents have taken to social media to share their views on the building, which some people have called an “eyesore”.

Others have also called for it to be demolished or completely revamped.

Pomy Collingwood said: “That and the Brighton Centre, both should be torn down and replaced with some decent-looking buildings.”

Another resident Trevor Hemsley said: “It’s a disgrace, I worked on that when it was built, doesn’t look as if it’s had a coat of paint externally since.”

Some people also suggested that the cinema should be replaced with Georgian-style town housing or “something new”.

However, some people across the city have shown fondness towards the building, which was first opened in 1965.

Kieran Gorman said: “It’s an amazing-looking building.

“The roof is so unique. I think it’s part of what makes Brighton stand out, in a good way.”

Michael Young also agreed with this and said: “Leave it alone!

“It’s different, it’s Brighton.”

These plans to give the building a refreshed look have been announced around the same time the future of Pryzm nightclub, which is in the same building, has been confirmed.

Pryzm and its neighbouring bar Steinbeck and Shaw in West Street, Brighton, are one of eleven sites that have been saved after operator Rekom announced a restructure.

The planning application to transform the look of the building is yet to be decided on by the council.
