The car struck the animal on Inveresk Street in the city’s Greenfield on Wednesday evening.
An eyewitness said they and a few others stopped to help the owners, who were ‘inconsolable’ after the horrific incident.
In a post on local community group no1seems2care, they said: “Just witnessed a dog being knocked down on Inveresk street, the car didn’t stop.
“The owners are inconsolable, myself and a couple of others stopped to try [and] help but think the wee dog has passed. Can’t get them out my head.
“The driver really should have stopped (even if that’s not the law) and make sure the owner was okay.”
The incident was reported to the police, who confirmed the car did not stop and that the dog died at the scene.
An investigation has been launched.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were made aware of a dog having been struck by a vehicle on Inveresk Street in Glasgow around 8.25pm on Wednesday, January 24.
“The vehicle did not stop and the dog died at the scene.
“Enquiries are ongoing.”
