Hello and welcome back to Max Q! In this issue: Why space parachutes are so hard A new lawsuit alleging safety issues at Blue Origin News from Loft Orbital, Relativity Space and more SpaceX is known for its vertical integration, but one component it’s been outsourcing is parachutes — until earlier this month, when the company quietly acquired parachute vendor Pioneer Aerospace after its parent company went bankrupt. The Information first reported the news. Saving a vendor from dissolution — which would’ve likely been Pioneer’s fate, given the bankruptcy of its parent company — seems like a strong gesture on the part…

This achievement positions them, with IBM, as front runners to reach quantum utility for real-world use cases. The experiment was run with Algorithmiq’s proprietary error mitigation algorithms on the IBM Nazca, the 127 qubit Eagle processor, using 50 active qubits x 98 layers of CNOTS and thus a total of 2402 CNOTS gates. This significant milestone for the field is the result of a collaboration between the two teams, who joined forces back in 2022 to pave the way towards achieving the first useful quantum advantage for chemistry. Quantum computers, when operated, still have high levels of errors that stand…

Water is often the go-to resource for heat transfer, being used in large-scale cooling operations like data centers that power the internet and nuclear power plants that power cities. Discovering dynamic phenomena to make water-based heat transfer more energy and cost efficient is the ongoing work of Jonathan Boreyko, associate professor and John R. Jones III Faculty Fellow in mechanical engineering. Boreyko and his team have published extensively on the topic of water and the way it can move, with members of his Nature-Inspired Fluids and Interfaces Lab producing water droplets that leap propelled by surface tension and frost that…

Wonka review and star rating: ★★★★ Don’t take any notice of the saccharine posters for Wonka: the primary-coloured, heavily CGI’d images make this origin story look sugary-sweet. It is that, but it’s also much more. Bringing back one of Roald Dahl’s most famous characters is a formidable undertaking but Paul King and Simon Farnaby’s new universe does Dahl’s imagination justice. In many ways, Wonka is the pristine golden ticket: sweeping musical numbers set in factories and workhouses where eccentric types produce chocolate or clean linen (wait and see on that last part). If you want to view paradise, you’re definitely…
