Since last Thursday, eight Hastings councillors have quit the Labour party to form a new independent group, styled as the Hastings Independents. They include council leader Paul Barnett and five other members of the authority’s cabinet. In a statement announcing their resignation, the councillors said they felt the national party no longer provided “the policies, the support or the focus on local government” needed to address local issues. A spokesperson for the national party disputed this, saying the councillors’ “performative gesture politics” had driven the authority to the “brink of bankruptcy”. The resignations have also come in for criticism by…

SimSpace, a startup that creates digital replicas of organizations’ tech and networking stacks for cybersecurity training, has raised $45 million in a funding round led by L2 Point Management. Bringing the company’s total raised to $70 million, the investment comes at an auspicious time for SimSpace, which had been entirely bootstrapped until about two years ago. SimSpace is on its way to hitting its annual recurring revenue goal of $50 million by the end of fiscal year 2023, according to co-founder and CEO William Hutchison. And it’s expanding its private-sector customer roster, having shored up contracts with the U.S. Cyber…
In line with its fellow Scandinavian neighbours, Denmark has garnered global renown for its excellence in healthcare, expansive professional opportunities, consistent ratings among the happiest countries globally, and the breathtaking landscapes that beckon you to explore. Yet, for digital nomads captivated by the allure of this lifestyle, there is a slight snag: Denmark does not currently offer any digital nomad visa. Though this may seem like a disappointing limitation, not all hope is lost. The country does still open its doors to eager nomads. It offers various opportunities remote workers may be able to take advantage of so any hopeful…

Despite the fervor in memecoin trading, some trading firms suggest that recent market movements do not indicate an imminent correction in the short term. Earlier today, the world’s largest cryptocurrency Bitcoin (BTC) gained an additional 5% taking its price past $43,000 levels. The recent price surge comes as BlackRock, WisdomTree, and others submit their updated S1 applications to the SEC. Along with Bitcoin, the altcoin market is once again buzzing with activity. Solana, Avalanche, and Injective tokens experienced significant surges, reaching up to 20% over the last 24 hours as the memecoin trading craze entered its third consecutive week on…
Credit: Pixabay/CC0 Public Domain Two local nonprofit leaders are praising Rep. Mike Levin, D-San Juan Capistrano, and others in Congress for introducing a bipartisan bill that would authorize $60 million annually to protect coastal wetlands. The Resilient Coast and Estuaries Act would strengthen efforts to preserve natural habitats along the San Luis Rey River in Oceanside, the San Elijo Lagoon on the border of Encinitas and Solana Beach, and in coastal communities across the United States from the sea-level rise and intensifying storms that accompany climate change. “As climate change and development continue to degrade the functioning of these coastal…
Along with councillors Jacob Taylor and Lucy Helliwell who co-chair the children, families and schools committee, I have attended public consultation meetings to hear from parents and staff directly. We know this is very upsetting for the communities concerned and we have heard many and varied genuine concerns. We know there is also some confusion and misunderstanding surrounding the proposals and so I want to address some of the key issues head on. Proposing to close schools is a nightmare situation and as an administration we would not be putting forward these proposals if we believed there were other workable…

Existential risk has become one of the biggest memes in AI. The hypothesis is that one day we will build an AI that is far smarter than humans, and this could lead to grave consequences. It’s an ideology championed by many in Silicon Valley, including Ilya Sutskever, OpenAI’s chief scientist, who played a pivotal role in ousting OpenAI CEO Sam Altman (and then reinstating him a few days later). But not everyone agrees with this idea. Meta’s AI leaders Yann LeCun and Joelle Pineau have said that these fears are “ridiculous” and the conversation about AI risks has become “unhinged.” Many other power players in AI, such…
