Ashdown Forest can be a harsh place during the colder months but that does not stop a group of 35 semi feral Exmoor ponies who continue to graze when other herds have left for their winter quarters. The ponies are moved around to graze the specialist habitats that help to ensure the survival of many of the forest’s rare species of plants and animals. They live on the forest for the whole year, whereas the sheep and cattle are moved off for the winter months and returned in the spring. Ash Walmsley, Ashdown Forest’s countryside manger, said: “Exmoor ponies are…

L3Harris, which owns the factory in Moulsecoomb, Brighton, is asking for permission to keep a temporary extension built in September 2018. The grey hangar-like building to the side of the factory was meant to be demolished after five years. But L3Harris says the building should stay, adding that removing it would harm local employment and the environment. A planning application states: “The extension does not cause any harm to the appearance of the building, or the wider location, and [the] removal of the extension would adversely impact on the business requirements of the applicant, with associated risk to local employment. “If the extension were…

The tragedy occurred on a TUI flight operating between Tenerife and Glasgow on Friday (December 29). Reports suggest the female passenger suffered a cardiac arrest mid-flight, forcing the flight to divert from its original route and make an emergency landing in Madeira.  Flight tracking data shows TUI flight BY1573 departed Tenerife Sur Airport around 5:30pm local time bound for Glasgow, before a Squawk 7700 – indicating an emergency onboard the aircraft – was declared approximately one hour into the flight. The plane then diverted to Funchal Airport before landing at 6:40pm local time. Despite a prompt response from EMIR (Rapid Intervention Medicalized Team) on the ground in Madeira, medical crews were…

In a breakthrough discovery, published in Nature Communications, scientists from Queen Mary University of London in collaboration with researchers at Newcastle University and The Francis Crick Institute have unraveled the intricate mechanism behind how DnaA, the master initiator of DNA replication in bacteria, specifically opens replication origins, the gateways to DNA duplication. This fundamental understanding sheds light on the crucial process that underpins the growth and reproduction of nearly all bacterial cells. In this multi-disciplinary work employing single-molecule TIRF microscopy, chemical biology and structural biology, Dr Aravindan Ilangovan, Reader in Structural Biology, and his team at School of Biological and…

The five-year-old lapwing, a wading bird that breeds on farmland, successfully fledged four young of her own at the RSPB Pulborough Brooks reserve this year. She was marked with a unique identification as a chick at the site in 2018. Lapwings have seen population declines in recent years and are now red-listed in the UK as a bird of conservation concern. Lapwings are seen near the water at Pulborough Brooks (Image: RSPB) Pressures of agricultural changes and land drainage mean the habitat suitable for breeding wading bird species such as lapwing has been lost across England. However, thanks to beneficial conservation…
