The annual event raises much-needed funds for the 1st Birdham and Witterings Scout Group to allow it to continue to provide services for young people in the area in 2024. The Big Dip’s crowdfunder for the Scouts has raised more than £700 so far. Shelia…

Magnetism occurs depending on how electrons behave. For example, the elementary particles can generate an electric current with their charge and thereby induce a magnetic field. However, magnetism can also arise through the collective alignment of the magnetic moments (spins) in a material. What has not been possible until now, however, is to continuously change the type of magnetism in a crystal. An international research team led by TU Wien professor Andrej Pustogow has now succeeded in doing just that: Changing magnetism “by pushing a button.” For that, the team continuously changed the magnetic interactions in a single crystal by…

Below is a gallery of some of our favourite pictures from the last year. Kenta Matsumoto crossing the finish line at the Brighton Half Marathon (Image: Andrew Gardner / The Argus) When student Kenta Matsumoto crossed the finish line at the Brighton Half Marathon in February, he was overcome with emotion, collapsing into the arms of a steward – but little did he know he would make the front page of the following day’s Argus newspaper. How the mighty have fallen. In 2018, Aquaman was released and performed incredibly well, making over a billion dollars and providing a breath of fresh air in a year of serious comic book movies. Reshoots, on-set issues, and the fate of a studio have meant its follow up has not fared as well.  Quick history lesson – The DC Extended Universe (DCEU) started om 2013 with Man of Steel, and was meant to rival Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. For many reasons, that hasn’t been the case, and director James Gunn has taken over the DC Universe with a plan to reboot…

The structure of AS-SwinT. Credit: Plant Phenomics (2023). DOI: 10.34133/plantphenomics.0085 Berry thinning is crucial for cultivating high-quality table grapes, traditionally carried out by skilled laborers who are becoming scarce due to an aging population. To address the labor-intensive and time-consuming process, researchers are focused on developing an intelligent machine vision system for automated berry thinning. Current studies utilize deep learning (DL) and image processing to count and locate berries, with methodologies ranging from analyzing whole vine images to focusing on single-grape-bunch images for improved accuracy and efficiency. However, challenges persist in accurately detecting small berries during the thinning season due…
