Medical technology innovations achieved by integrating science and medicine have improved the quality of life for patients. Especially noteworthy is the emergence of electronic devices implanted in the body, such as in the heart or brain, which enable real-time measurement and regulation of physiological signals, presenting new solutions for challenging conditions like Parkinson’s disease. However, technical constraints have hindered the semi-permanent use of electronic devices after their implantation. A collaborative research team led by Professor Sung-Min Park from the Departments of Convergence IT Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering, and the School of Interdisciplinary Bioscience and Bioengineering at POSTECH, alongside…
Hostel Point, in Grand Junction Road, Brighton, gradually fell into disrepair before shutting entirely in 2019. A number of planning applications that would have brought the Regency building back to life have been rejected meaning it has continued to crumble, sparking fears for public safety. “I walked past the hostel yesterday and the front of the building seems to be seriously sinking, and it has a really buckled look to it,” one person told The Argus. The current condition of grounds surrounding the building has sparked safety fears (Image: Andrew Gardner) “I wonder if the whole building will collapse and…

In the realm of superconductivity, the durability and efficiency of materials like REBCO (Rare Earth Barium Copper Oxide) tapes are crucial for application in various high-tech fields. However, these materials face challenges, particularly when it comes to maintaining their superconducting properties under stress. A recent study delves into the intricate relationship between mechanical stress and the…
The freeholds for the 89 garages across Eastbourne were bought by property developers. One of the lots in Wadhurst Close fetched £231,000 in total. Auctioneers said property investors were very keen to bid on the garages, which can be developed. Metropolitan Police detectives are looking at “potential fraud offences” committed during the Horizon IT scandal. More than 700 Post Office branch managers were handed criminal convictions after faulty Fujitsu accounting software made it appear as though money was missing from their outlets. It has been described as the most widespread miscarriage of justice in UK history and a public inquiry into it is ongoing. Scotland Yard said on Friday evening that officers are “investigating potential fraud offences arising out of these prosecutions”, for example “monies recovered from sub-postmasters as a result of prosecutions or civil actions”. The Met has already been looking into…

Using a new technology developed at MIT, diagnosing lung cancer could become as easy as inhaling nanoparticle sensors and then taking a urine test that reveals whether a tumor is present. The new diagnostic is based on nanosensors that can be delivered by an inhaler or a nebulizer. If the sensors encounter cancer-linked proteins in the lungs, they produce a signal that accumulates in the urine, where it can be detected with a simple paper test strip. This approach could potentially replace or supplement the current gold standard for diagnosing lung cancer, low-dose computed tomography (CT). It could have an…
