New ratings show that the city’s nine major chocolate shops helped to propel it to fourth in a survey ranking cities based on their love of chocolate. The city was narrowly pipped to the top three chocolate loving cities in the country by York, Edinburgh and Birmingham. Once home to the famous Choccywoccydoodah shop in The Lanes, Brighton is now home to nine chocolate shops with an average rating on Google of 4.6 stars. Taking inspiration from the human brain, researchers have developed a new synaptic transistor capable of higher-level thinking. Designed by researchers at Northwestern University, Boston College and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the device simultaneously processes and stores information just like the human brain. In new experiments, the researchers demonstrated that the transistor goes beyond simple machine-learning tasks to categorize data and is capable of performing associative learning. Although previous studies have leveraged similar strategies to develop brain-like computing devices, those transistors cannot function outside cryogenic temperatures. The new device, by contrast, is stable at room temperatures. It also operates…

These wonderful seasonal photographs really capture the spirit of Brighton and Hove as residents braved thick snow in winters gone by. Many of our readers will remember long winters when snow would settle for days on end, covering rooftops and roads. Back in 1935, it got so cold that Falmer Pond would be covered in a layer of ice so thick that people could skate on it. Cars would regularly get stuck in thick snow at Saddlescombe Hill, near Devil’s Dyke and at what used to be Waterhall golf course people would even get out their skis. A photo from…

This images shows two years of ensemble projections (rainbow lines) generated by the COVID-19 Scenario Modeling Hub and real-world COVID-19 data (black lines). Different rounds of projections—the hub produced 16 rounds of projections, each of which predicted anywhere from three months to a year of pandemic outcomes—are represented by different colors. For each round, four scenarios were created and multiple modeling teams produced projections. Those individual projections were combined into ensemble projections for each scenario, which are displayed. The Hub found that the ensemble model outperformed individual projections, highlighting the value of a collaborative modeling approach. Credit: Emily Howerton /…
