Sussex Police were called to a report of a vehicle in the middle of the road in Middleton where the driver appeared to be asleep at the wheel on Sunday (March 1) at 6pm.
Two police officer attended the scene and found the vehicle in Lane End Road. They were subsequently assaulted by a man from the car, police said.
One of the officers sustained a head injury and was taken to hospital for medical checks and treatment.
Raimonds Vilde, of Sycamore Road, Bognor, has been charged with drink driving.
The 40-year-old has also been charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent on a police officer and assaulting the other police officer.
He was remanded to appear at Crawley Magistrates’ Court today (March 3).
