If we look back at the year of 2026 so far, it might be easy to see cybersecurity falling by the wayside, as much of the world’s attention remains on wars raging, the climate worsening, and we’re seemingly just one dodgy sneeze away from the next global pandemic. But cybersecurity remains a powerful barometer of what’s happening on the world stage, with botnets powering digital efforts to undermine the West and governments weaponizing citizens’ data and civilian infrastructure against entire populations of people. All the while, financially motivated hackers seek massive ransom payouts, as they spark disruption and occasional destruction…

The U.K. has just imposed legal guardrails on Google’s AI search onslaught. On Wednesday, Google announced compliance with the U.K.’s regulatory requirements, which state that the tech giant must offer publishers a way to opt out of being aggregated into AI search. To opt out, publishers will be able to use a new toggle in Google’s Search Console, a free service that allows website owners to manage their web presence in Google’s search results. Once opted out, the publisher’s site will not be shown in Google’s generative AI Search features, like AI Overviews, AI Mode, or AI Overviews in Discover.…

A range of food and drinks will also be prepared by some of Portland Road’s independent businesses. The event is made to be enjoyed by all with the support of local businesses…
Beluga whales are among the most challenging marine mammals to study. Much of their lives are spent beneath Arctic waters and sea ice, making direct observation difficult. Now, a long-term DNA study has provided rare insight into how a population of belugas in Bristol Bay, Alaska, forms family connections and maintains genetic health. The findings suggest that both male and female belugas reproduce with multiple partners over the course of their lives. Researchers believe this behavior may help this relatively small and isolated population avoid inbreeding and preserve genetic diversity. “We still know very little about beluga whales, despite their…
If your office is still running on a traditional landline setup, there’s a good chance that you’re paying too much and missing out on features that your competitors might already be using. So what’s next? A technology called Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). Calls are made using the Internet instead of a copper wire phone line. Not only does it make calling significantly cheaper, but VoIP systems offer modern features from call forwarding to virtual receptionists. These are things that a traditional phone system simply can’t do. And if businesses are getting that and more for a fraction of the…
Developer platform GitLab has laid off about 14% of its workforce, about 350 employees, as part of a broader restructuring effort it detailed last month. The company said in May that it was going to reduce its workforce as it exited 22 countries, flattened management layers, and invested in infrastructure to scale its platform and serve increased traffic from AI workflows, with a sharper focus on research and development. CEO Bill Staples said during a conference call on Tuesday that agentic workloads are stressing developer infrastructure more than it was designed to handle. It isn’t a problem unique to GitLab.…
Bitcoin price has tumbled to its lowest level in months Wednesday night, crashing below $62,000 and wiping out a sharp intraday loss of more than $5,300 — a decline of nearly 8% in 24 hours — as a perfect storm of institutional exodus, leverage liquidations, geopolitical fear, and a symbolic but jarring sale by Michael Saylor’s Strategy converged to shatter market confidence. At approximately 10:00 PM EDT, Bitcoin price was changing hands at $61,463.22, down from a 24-hour high of $67,416.50 and dangerously close to the psychologically critical $60,000 floor. The selloff erased weeks of tentative recovery and put the…
Customer support and service are among the hottest sectors in voice AI right now. But building a product that sounds human and responds without noticeable delay turns out to be much harder in some markets than others — and most of the major players weren’t built with Africa and the Middle East in mind. AethexAI, a startup founded last year to close that gap, has raised $3 million in pre-seed funding led by 4DX Ventures, with participation from Enza Capital, Dorm Room Fund, Mojo Ventures, and Stanford GSB 26 Fund. Individual investors include Stanford faculty, telecom executives, and AI researchers…
