After NASA’s Curiosity Mars rover drilled a sample from this rock on April 25, 2026, it withdrew its robotic arm and pulled the entire rock off the surface with it. This close-up image of the rock was produced by Curiosity’s Mast Camera, or Mastcam, on May 6. Nicknamed “Atacama,” the rock is estimated to be 1.5 feet in diameter at its base and 6 inches thick. It would weigh roughly…

Meridian Ventures was born out of a shared experience: deferred MBAs. Now, founders Devon Gethers and Karlton Haney have raised a $35 million fund to back pre-seed and seed-stage companies started by people like them. Gethers, 29, told TechCrunch the idea for a firm arose after he met Haney in Harvard’s MBA deferred admission program in 2020. Gethers grew up in poverty in Washington State, studied behavioral science and finance at the University of Utah, then moved into private equity before launching a company of his own (which he later exited). Haney, meanwhile, grew up on a farm in Arkansas,…

Itinerary changes can happen on any cruise itinerary, whether it is swapping a port of call, changing up the port order, or even cancelling a port visit. For guests booked on Allure of the Seas‘ May 1, 2027 departure, not only have two ports been…

AI video generation startup Runway doesn’t have the typical Silicon Valley pedigree. No Stanford founders, no ex-Google founders, no nine-figure seed round that bought them time to ignore revenue. Its three founders — two from Chile, one from Greece —  met at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and built the company in New York. Runway also could be, depending on who you ask, one of the most consequential AI companies today. Not because of what it has built, but because of what it is trying to build next.  For the past several years, the AI industry has largely operated…

Want to make money? Start building data centers. Or build batteries to power data centers. Or: pivot to defense. This is not financial advice, but it’s certainly what seems to be winning over public markets and private investors lately. Ford’s nascent energy storage business — a fraction in size to Tesla’s and won’t be ready until next year — helped its stock jump more than it has in years. Redwood Materials raised $425 million from blue chip companies like Google and Nvidia by pivoting to data center energy storage. Cerebras just pulled off one of the hottest IPOs of 2026.…

Not long ago, pitching a startup as a solo founder was a red flag in most investor meetings. Everyone agreed: great companies need co-founders, one person can’t do it all. To ensure comprehensive skills, execution and resilience, a second or third founder was non-negotiable. While that wisdom remains relevant, data is now contradicting it. According to Carta’s 2025 Solo Founders Report, the share of new startups with a solo founder jumped from 23.7% in 2019 to 36.3% in the first half of 2025 – more than one in three. Separately, 580,612 new businesses were formed in March 2026 alone, a…
