Sarah Gillespie, an Anglo-American artist, will be joined by Chris Montague at the Ropetackle Arts Centre on Thursday, November 26 at 8pm.
The pair will be performing pieces from their new record The Shieling, after forming a collaboration following a series of performances in California.
Gillespie and Montague then retreated to a cottage on the shores of Loch Fyne, Scotland, to record the new stripped-back duo album.
Described as a mix of Tom Waits’ grit, Adrianne Lenker’s intimacy and Allen Ginsberg’s restless spirit, the album is expected to showcase the unique talents of both artists.
Gillespie, whose songwriting has drawn comparisons with Bob Dylan, is renowned for her poetic lyricism, sharp observation and storytelling.
Her work draws on folk, Americana, blues and Beat-inspired poetry.
She has released five critically acclaimed albums over the past 15 years and has toured extensively in the UK, Europe and the US.
Her performances at leading venues and festivals, such as Blue Note in Milan, Ronnie Scott’s in London and CBGB’s in NYC, have been met with widespread praise.
Montague, a renowned composer and guitarist, is known for his maverick musicianship on electric and acoustic guitar, pedal steel and mandolin.
His skills add a rich sonic palette to the music, enhancing Gillespie’s compelling live performances.
The upcoming performance at Ropetackle is expected to be a treat for lovers of nuanced music and sophisticated lyricism, offering an opportunity to witness the chemistry between two acclaimed musicians.
Gillespie has also appeared on various BBC Radio 4 programmes such as Woman’s Hour and Loose Ends.
She has also played a significant role in mentoring aspiring songwriters during the global lockdown in 2020 by founding the Create Now Academy.
The academy delivers transformative songwriting and creativity programmes, workshops and retreats to women worldwide.
Gillespie is a producer through her label Pastiche Records and the co-founder of She Writes Songs, a non-profit organisation that champions female songwriters.
Tickets for the event can be purchased via the Ropetackle Arts Centre website.
