Sussex Police said the girl reported that the man sexually assaulted her by touching her in a field near Edinburgh Road, St Leonards, at about 3.05pm on Monday (July 20).
The victim managed to run off and the man made off towards Filsham Road, police said.
He was white, between 5ft9in and 5ft11in, aged between 25 and 35 with light brown curly hair, stubble and was wearing a red jacket and dark blue jeans.
Detective Inspector Barry Chandler said: “This is a fast moving investigation and our specially trained officers are supporting the victim.
“We are appealing for any witnesses who were in the area who may have seen anyone of this description acting suspiciously or saw the incident to come forward. We would also like to hear from anyone with relevant CCTV or doorbell footage which could help our investigation.
“We are aware of the alarm that this will cause to the local community, and we have stepped up police patrols who will remain in the area while we continue to investigate. Please speak to our officers if you have any concerns.”
