A suspicious vehicle was at the centre of a security alert which closed a train station yesterday afternoon.

The train station in the Waterside Link area of Derry was evacuated at 4pm on Wednesday, July 1, due to a security alert that caused significant disruption.

Ammunition technical officers attended the scene and a suspicious vehicle was searched, but nothing found.

Inspector Keith Courtney said: “This alert began at around 4pm yesterday, 1st July. We immediately implemented a public safety operation, with the train station evacuated and a number cordons put in place and roads closed.

“We know this caused significant disruption for the public, given the time of the day, and we thank all those impacted for their patience and co-operation as we conducted our enquiries.

“As enquiries continue, we urge anyone who may have been in the area of Waterside Link yesterday, or in recent days, in the vicinity of the train station, and who saw anything unusual or suspicious to contact police.
