Police are appealing for witnesses following the incident which occurred outside Whitecliffs cafe on Marine Drive, Saltdean, between 6.40pm and 6.50pm on June 19.
A man was sitting on a wall outside the café when a white van reportedly reversed close to him, police said.
After a verbal altercation between the driver and the victim, police said the victim was reportedly punched several times by the driver.
The suspect is described as a man of mixed ethnicity, around 6ft tall, of slim build, bald, with no facial hair.
He was described as smartly dressed, wearing black trousers and a light-coloured jacket.
The vehicle involved is believed to be a white Volkswagen Transporter van.
Police are looking to speak with anyone witnessed the incident, has dashcam footage, CCTV, or any information that may help with their enquiries.
