A red weather warning for extreme heat has been issued for some parts of Sussex from 9am on Wednesday, June 24, until 9pm on Thursday, June 25.
The Met Office has warned that there will be an “exceptional spell of hot and humid weather” and has advised the public to expect “population-wide adverse health effects”.
In West Sussex, two colleges have announced they will be shut due to the high temperatures.
Ifield Community College, on Crawley Avenue, Ifield, shared it will be closed on Wednesday and Thursday.
It said it plans to reopen as normal on Friday, June 26.
The College of Richard Collyer, on Hurst Road, Horsham, will also be closed.
It said: “The Met Office has issued a red extreme heat warning for this Wednesday and Thursday. In light of this, we have made the decision to close the college on both days. All lessons and meetings will be cancelled.
“We will not be moving online, as we do not wish students or staff to work from home or on site during this period.”
The college said it will be “closely monitoring the situation” but currently also plans to reopen on Friday.
The Met Office advises drinking plenty of fluids, keeping out of the sun, and avoiding any exercise between 11am and 3pm, as well as closing curtains in rooms that face the sun.
It says to take water with you if going outside, and to stay in the shade, wear sunscreen and a wide-brimmed hat.
Avoid delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, and amending your travel plans if necessary.
If using public transport, carry water with you, take a small hand-held battery-powered fan, and get off at the next stop for fresh air if you feel unwell.
It is also advised to dress in light fabrics in light colours to help stay cooler and keep an eye on fellow passengers for signs they may be struggling.
