A teenage boy who died after a horrific accident at the Donegal International Rally has been named locally.
It’s understood a car competing in the race veered off a section of the road at Trentagh during the 12th stage of the race on Saturday afternoon.
Tadhg Callaghan Carter, 15, was a spectator at the event and was taken to Letterkenny University Hospital where he was pronounced deceased, the Irish Mirror reports.
The local coroner has been notified, and a port-mortem examination will be arranged.
Two other people were taken to hospital following the incident. It’s understood they were in a stable condition and their injuries were non-life threatening.
Gardaí and emergency services were alerted to the incident shortly before 5pm on Saturday, June 20.
The incident occurred on Location 15 on Special Stage 12 Gartan of the race, and the road has now been reopened. The remaining stages of the rally were cancelled in the aftermath of the accident.
A garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí are appealing for witnesses who were present at ‘Location 15 on Special Stage 12 Gartan’ on Saturday 20th June 2026, particularly those with mobile phone or dash cam footage in the area.
“Anyone with information is asked to contact Letterkenny Garda Station at 074 916 7100 or the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111. Investigations are ongoing and further updates will follow.”
Gardai have urged members of the public to refrain from sharing footage of the incident which has been circulating online.
“An Garda Síochána is aware that images and video footage related to this incident are circulating on social media and messaging platforms,” a garda spokesperson said in a statement.
“We appeal to anyone who receives this content to refrain from sharing or reposting it further.”
