Queen Camilla has written to a local resident about the campaign to purchase the Fountain Inn in Plumpton Green, East Sussex, writing: “I am full of admiration for your efforts to buy the Fountain Inn.”
Villagers have said the pub has been at the “heart of the community” for 175 years.
The pub was put up for sale earlier this year by Punch Pubs, prompting the formation of The Fountain Inn Community Benefit Society. The group has since raised nearly £300,000 in pledges towards the £475,000 asking price, plus VAT.
Queen Camilla’s connection to Plumpton is personal, as her family lived for many years in The Laines, a large home on the edge of neighbouring village, Plumpton.
Stuart Wallis, chairman of The Fountain Inn Community Benefit Society, said: “Queen Camilla’s backing is a sign of just what the Fountain Inn means to a village like Plumpton.
“Current and former residents – such as Her Royal Highness – understand that the pub is and will always be the real heart of the community that offers social engagement across all demographics.
“We are delighted to have had such high backing in this bid.”
The society has confirmed that the Queen wrote in a letter to a resident: “I am full of admiration for your efforts to buy the Fountain Inn.
“Please do let me know how you get on.”
The group of volunteers hope to purchase the pub to then let it to a tenant landlord.
