Carl Cox, who has Hove links and is listed on the official announcement as being based in Horsham, has been awarded an OBE for services to music.
At 15, Cox bought a set of turntables and began working as a mobile DJ. He played rare groove, hip‑hop and electro before embracing house and techno in the 1980s. By the end of the 80s he was a leading figure in dance music and was part of the emerging British rave scene. Cox played the opening night of the legendary Shoom and co-promoted and DJed at The Project alongside Paul Oakenfold.
The DJ, renowned for his three-deck mixing and huge vinyl collection, released his 1991 debut single for Paul Oakenfold’s Perfecto label, ‘I Want You’. The single reached number 23 in the UK charts.
The 63-year-old formed his own label, Intec Records, in 1999 and is also known for his legendary 15-year Ibiza residency at Space which came to an end in 2016. Cox’s residency helped define Ibiza’s club culture in the 2000s and 2010s.
Critics, peers and fans often describe him as a “King of Ibiza”, a pioneer of the rave era and one of the most important DJs in the history of electronic dance music.
