This year’s tournament is being held across Canada, the United States, and Mexico, the first time a single edition has spanned three countries.
And it’s the Mexicans getting things underway, hosting the tournament’s first match on June 11 against South Africa at the Estadio Azteca.
None other than Shakira and her veracious hips lit up the opening ceremony, performing at the ground to officially launch sport’s biggest party.
Ahead of kick-off, the King and Queen on Marlborough Place was abuzz with excited fans, with a strong contingent of Mexican supporters fuelling a festival atmosphere.
Brighton-born Itzela and her mum Gisela were watching with a lively group of friends.
“My mum moved to Brighton 30 years ago to study,” Itzela said. “She met my dad, and never left. I was born here.
“In England, we’re Tottenham fans. But every World Cup, we all get together to watch Mexico.
“I’d be happy with a 2-0 win tonight.
“But my husband has a bet on that Mexico will score at least one goal – so I’d settle for that.
“It’s great to see so many people here supporting Mexico.”
Mum Gizela, who works at Brighton MET college, added: “We always come to King and Queen to watch Mexico. For us, it’s the Brighton stadium!
“I think Mexico can win – why not?
“I’ve got British nationality, but I will always be Mexican!”
José and Patricia were also there with friends.
“We’re excited for the World Cup,” José said. “Mexico is hosting it for the third time!”
Patricia, a patriot more than a diehard football fan, added: “I don’t know if Mexico can win the tournament, to be honest.
“I’m here not so much for the football – more to support my country.
“But there’s a big Mexican community in Brighton, lots of students. I’ll be cheering them on.”
Though the pub was dominated by vibrant Mexican supporters, that’s not to say there weren’t any South African fans.
Sipo was there to cheer on his country with his brothers.
“We’re here to support South Africa,” he said. “We’re big football fans.
“Looking at the line-up, I think we’ll get a draw today. But I’m optimistic of a win.
“I live in Brighton. I’m a Chelsea fan, but I’ve been to all of Brighton’s home games since December.”
Despite his loyal support of his country, he had a positive message for those backing the Three Lions of England.
“I also know that football’s coming home,” Sipo said. “I’m from South Africa, but I’ve put my bet on England to win the World Cup.”
Did he feel outnumbered by all the Mexican fans at the King and Queen?
“No, no. Actually, once the game starts, they will feel outnumbered by me!”
