“Sadly the body of a 47-year-old man from Brighton was recovered.
“His next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this time.
“There were no suspicious circumstances and a report will be prepared for HM Coroner.”
The search began at 5.29pm after Solent Coastguard requested the launch of the D-Class Inshore Lifeboat, The Peter Dixon.
The lifeboat crew worked alongside partner agencies, including Eastbourne, Birling Gap, and Newhaven Coastguard Rescue Teams, Sussex Police, South East Coast Ambulance Service, the HM Coastguard Helicopter Rescue 375, the air ambulance, and Newhaven RNLI lifeboats.
After locating the casualty, the crew provided emergency care in collaboration with other emergency services before returning to station.
Eastbourne RNLI said: “Following the search, our ILB crew attempted lifesaving casualty care alongside other emergency service personnel before returning to station.”
Emergency services have urged the public to dial 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard in the event of a coastal emergency.
An inquest will be held in due course.
