Rail services heading in and out of London from the county have returned to normal after a large fire next to the tracks caused major disruption during the Monday evening commute.

Trains were diverted away from London Bridge because of the blaze at a recycling centre in the New Cross area of the capital.

Southeastern said the “major disruption” was expected to be ongoing until 10.30pm but confirmed said the incident was not fully cleared until 2.30am.

On Tuesday morning, the operator said “trains are able to run normally” with all lines open again.

Network Rail also said trains were forced to run at reduced speed through the area, with fewer lines available for use.

It added: “We apologise for the delay to your journey this evening.”

The London Fire Brigade has declared a “major incident” and has sent 15 fire engines and more than 100 firefighters to the centre in Landmann Way, Bermondsey. It was called around 5.30pm.

Station commander Wayne Bloomfield said: “Firefighters are working hard to extinguish a large amount of refuse alight at a recycling centre.

“Due to the significant amount of smoke in the area, local residents are advised to keep their windows and doors closed.

“Loose embers have also been reported, which is normal during large fires.

“Residents are advised to pour water onto them if they are concerned about loose embers on or near their properties, but if they do catch something alight, don’t hesitate to call 999.”
