Emergency services were called to the road, near the Dyke Road roundabouts near Hove, at around 9.15am on Saturday (June 6).
A car was reported to have collided with a pedestrian, who is understood to have fallen from a footbridge passing over the carriageway, Sussex Police said.
On attendance, a 59-year-old local man was declared dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.
A Sussex Police spokesman said: “Enquiries are ongoing to understand exactly what has happened, but there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances at this time.
“Anyone with information that could help the investigation is asked to contact us online or via 101, quoting serial 341 of 06/06, Operation Lanyard.”
The road was closed for several hours while investigation work was carried out and it reopened just before 6pm.
