Former Gillingham midfielder Josh Chambers hopes to show Sheppey United what they missed out on last time — now he’s agreed a return to Holm Park.

The 22-year-old first joined The Ites at the back end of the 2024/25 season, but his first spell there was cut short by a double hernia injury that sidelined him for nearly a year.

Following his recovery, he had spells at Chatham Town and then Ashford United.

Having now fully recovered, Chambers has committed to The Ites again and said: “After a difficult couple of years, I’m delighted to sign for Sheppey and get back playing again. I’m excited for the challenge ahead.”

Joint Sheppey boss Ian Batten said: “Josh was unfortunate to miss the chance to showcase his abilities to the fans [previously] due to his injury.

“But after taking the necessary time to return to full fitness, the club looks forward to seeing him perform in the red and white of the Ites as a significant component of the new squad currently being assembled.”

He is the latest player to agree a move to Sheppey United as they rebuild the squad this summer.

Experienced centre-half Cole Kpekawa, striker Mikey Salako, former VCD Athletic defender Harry Lawrence, energetic 22-year-old midfielder Cameron Andrews and returning player Josh Wisson have all committed to the club for next season so far.

D’Jean Spencer and Danny Leonard have also agreed to stay on from last season’s squad.

The latest addition Chambers, was a hot prospect as a teenager at Gillingham after emerging from the club’s youth academy and attracting interest from some top English sides.

He made his Gills debut while still a youth player and made his first league start for the club away at Sunderland.

Chambers explored his options in the summer of 2022, including a trial at Tottenham, before signing a new deal at Gillingham.

With first-team opportunities at Gillingham limited, he went on loan to Worthing during the 2022/23 season and then Welling United in the following campaign. He returned to Worthing at the back end of 2023/24.

Chambers was released by the Gills before joining Folkestone Invicta ahead of his frustrating first spell at Sheppey.
