The incident occurred on board a bus in Hove where a woman reported being abused by a fellow passenger.
The number 46 bus was travelling towards Portland Road in Hove at about 2.30pm on April 25 when the incident happened.
The incident is being treated as a racially aggravated offence under the Public Order Act and a hate crime.
Officers investigating have issued a CCTV image of a man they wish to speak with in connection with the investigation.
He is described as being a bald, stocky white man with a grey beard, 5’8”, wearing a black jacket, trousers and trainers and a dark coloured shirt, and wearing dark glasses.
Chief Inspector Dan Eagle said: “This was a distressing incident for the victim, and we have been working alongside Brighton & Hove Buses to secure CCTV footage and evidence.
“We are aware of the significant impact of Antisemitic incidents on our Jewish communities here in Sussex. We are proactively engaging with community leaders to offer support and reassurance.
“We can give the assurance to our Jewish communities, that there will be focused patrols in communities, at synagogues, schools, and events.
“We will continue to work with our communities and partners, to identify any emerging issues and respond to them swiftly to make sure people feel safe and are protected.
“Sussex Police is committed to being an anti-racist police service and will not tolerate hate crime against any community.

Anyone who recognises the man shown in the CCTV, or anyone with further information about the incident is asked to report it to Sussex Police online, quoting serial 773 of 25/04.
