Beer Belly on Victoria Terrace, Hove put a statement on social media on Sunday amid the busy bank holiday weekend.

The owners said: “Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate all the beach goers looking for a toilet in our pub.

“We only have one toilet and had over 100 people yesterday, blocking our customers from using our bathroom and [we had] some bad experiences. Please do not take offence when we say “toilets are for customer use only.”

Other businesses shared the pub’s predicament, with The Neptune Inn – also on Victoria Terrace – posting: “Same here, every single time the sun comes out. Hey @brightonhovecc, time for you to step up?

“PS shoutout to whoever left a pair of black boxer shorts in the gents. You know who you are and they were not clean.”

Despite there being public toilets nearby, one commenter noted: “People are way too comfortable leaving an absolute state in their wake, not worth it.”

Thousands of sun worshippers have descended on the city’s seafront over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The UK has experienced its hottest May temperatures on record over the weekend with temperatures in Brighton reaching 31 degrees on Monday.

As public toilets close or limit opening hours due to vandalism and mistreatment, an increasing number of pubs have found themselves being treated as public facilities.

The Bat and Ball in Ditchling Road in Brighton told The Argus last year that it had been inundated with people using their bathroom following the closure of public toilets at The Level.

In response, the council said the toilets had been closed due to “severe vandalism” which had “resulted in several serious health and safety concerns”.
