Councillor Caroline Baxter, who represents Central ward, was elected to head a new Labour minority administration at the annual meeting of the full council yesterday, May 19.

Councillor John Turley, for Gaisford ward, will serve as deputy leader of the council.

Following local elections on May 7, Labour was left with 15 seats on the council, four short of the 19 required for a majority and triggering a loss of overall control.

However, it has remained the largest group on the council.

The main opposition group will be the Green and Independent Alliance, which has ten members.

The council also agreed who would serve as the chairs and deputy chairs of each of its committees.

Councillor Helen Abrahams will chair the Worthing planning committee, with Councillor Samuel Theodoridi as the deputy.

The Worthing licensing and control committee will be chaired by Councillor Hilary Schan, with Councillor Cathy Glynn-Davies as the deputy.

Councillor Carl Walker will be the Worthing chair of the joint overview and scrutiny committee, Councillor Rosey Whorlow will be the Worthing chair of the joint audit and governance committee and Councillor John Turley will be the Worthing chair of the joint staff committee.

The names of those who will serve in Cllr Baxter’s cabinet will be confirmed in the coming days, a spokesman for Worthing Borough Council said.
