Today, May 17, the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride returned to West Sussex.

Setting off at 8am this morning, motorcyclists began their journey in Shoreham and finished in Chichester city centre at around 1pm.

This year marks 15 years of the global event, which raises funds and awareness for prostate cancer research and men’s mental health.

The ride was first founded in Sydney, Australia, by Mark Hawwa who thought a themed ride would be a great way to connect enthusiasts and raise funds for men’s health.

Over 300 people took part in the West Sussex ride, which has so far raised over £46,000.

Speaking ahead of the event, Laurence Foord, divisional manager for licensing, communications and events at Chichester District Council, said: “We’re really pleased to be working with the ride organisers again this year.

“It’s a unique event that supports a wonderful cause – last year’s event created a real spectacle in the city centre which many people enjoyed.

“The idea behind the dapper market is to help enhance the event, encourage people into the city centre to enjoy the motorcycles and stay longer to support local traders and businesses.”

Chichester District Council also supported the event by organising a ‘dapper and classic’ themed market along East Street.

Mr Foord added: “As a council we are always looking to work with other event organisers to help them make the most of their offering.

“The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride is in aid of a fantastic cause and we look forward to seeing the riders – we hope that as many people as possible will come and give them a huge welcome.”
