Good morning and welcome back to the City AM liveblog.
The stalemate in the Middle East is set to come to a head after President Donald Trump warned the “clock is ticking” on talks to end the war with Iran.
“They better get moving, FAST, or there won’t be anything left of them,” the President wrote on Truth Social.
“TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE!”
The message was a stark call back to Trump’s threat that a “whole civilisation” would die unless Iran agreed to a peace deal. This came shortly before the announced peace deal in April, but efforts since then have since waned.
Trump spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday, which comes amid reports the two are coordinating regarding a potential resumption of attacks.
Meanwhile, Iranian media has stated the US failed to make any concrete concessions in its response to Tehran’s latest proposals to end the conflict.
Elsewhere, back in London the City market is still battling its latest market jitters triggered by Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham’s bid for Parliament – a move which is viewed by many as a bid for Number 10.
The UK’s borrowing costs hit their highest since 2008 on the news, charging to 5.17 per cent at one point on Friday.
The pound fell 0.3 per cenr against the dollar to around $1.336 on Friday, following another steep fall on Thursday after Burnham’s announcement.
Market nerves are being driven by the suggestion Burnham would have loser fiscal policies if he was able to take the helm. The Metro Mayor had previously warned the country shouldn’t be “in hock” to bond markets.
We’ll be bringing you all the latest on this and more.
