Police attended the scene of the incident in London Road, Ashington, north of Worthing, at around 10.13pm yesterday, May 9.
The driver, who was aged 43 and from Surrey, died at the scene.
His next of kin have been notified and supported by specialist officers, Sussex Police said.
A spokesman for the force added: “Police are urging any witnesses, or anyone with any relevant camera footage, to email collision.appeal@sussex.police.uk quoting Operation Jenkinson.”
