A Belfast MLA has slammed the “disgraceful scenes” at a large car cruise event in the west of the city on Bank Holiday Monday evening, May 4.

Footage shared on social media by Danny Baker, MLA for West Belfast, showed a diffing event on the Stewartstown Road with scores of cars and hundreds of young people descending on the area for a so-called meet-up.

The PSNI had earlier issued a stern warning that “anti-social driving, or reckless driving will not be tolerated”.

In a statement, the Sinn Féin MLA condemned the scenes and hit out at those who travelled to the Colin area tonight and caused ‘chaos’.

Mr Baker said: “The scenes in the Colin area tonight were absolutely chaotic and nothing short of a disgrace.

“Lives were put at risk as cars freely spun around the road and motorbikes sped up and down. I strongly condemn those involved.“There is frustration in our community tonight, particularly directed at those who took part in this shocking behaviour, but also at the PSNI who did not arrive until the situation had already got out of control.“Police were made aware several hours ago of this pre-planned event and I urged them to deploy preventative measures to stop the cavalcade of cars from entering the area. These concerns fell on deaf ears, and by the time police arrived it was too late.“I will be requesting an urgent meeting with police to reflect the feelings of people in the Colin who feel completely let down. I am also urging swift action to ensure those involved in this reckless behaviour are apprehended.”

The PSNI has been contacted for a response.

In an earlier Facebook post, a spokesperson for Police West Belfast said: “We are aware of a planned cruise/diffing event tonight on the Stewartstown Road, and that any anti-social driving, or reckless driving will not be tolerated, and will met with swift action and enforcement.

“This kind of driving behaviour where large crowds may gather is dangerous, and those keen on taking part are advised not to.

“We would ask all road users to ensure their vehicles are road worthy, follow the rules of the road and drive with care and attention always.”
