The Comedy Mansion shares goal of bringing biggest names in comedy to Mu Mu in Maidstone - UK Daily: Tech, Science, Business & Lifestyle News Updates

A luxury London-style comedy club has been set up in a Kent town to offer a “cost-effective” night out for people.

The Comedy Mansion is holding a monthly show at Mu Mu in Maidstone with acts who have performed on Live at the Apollo and Mock the Week.

Set up by Rhys Samson, the upcoming shows will include Simon Brodkin, also known as Lee Nelson, as well as Dane Baptiste, Chantel Nash, and aspiring comedians.

The 32-year-old, who lives in Lenham and grew up in Maidstone, is hoping to attract the likes of Jimmy Carr by the end of the year.

He said: “We want to give people London access for a much lower price.

“You can spend £40 for a ticket in London, which goes up to £100 with food and drinks.

“We’re offering a cost-effective local option for as little as £10.”

Rhys has worked in the production industry for around 12 years and has worked alongside the likes of Liam Gallagher.

“We want to be the face of comedy in Kent,” he admitted.

“There’s a hole in the market for this sort of thing. A lot of places around the county don’t have the production value we do.

“There’s not a lot of comedy clubs around anymore. There’s nothing bringing mainstream comedians to the area.”

Due to his time in the industry, Rhys says he’s built up a list of well-known contacts in the comedy arena, which has helped him book big names.

He added: “I’ve had around 110 people apply to be on the show since we started. And we’ve had more well-known comedians get in touch with us about it.”

Speaking about the decision to choose MuMu, a well-known bar and restaurant in the town, Rhys explained: “MuMu is a fantastic venue for comedy.

“It brings a bit of glamour and has a great capacity of 130 people.”

Typically, doors will open at around 7pm, with the first act starting at 7.45pm and the last coming on stage at 10pm.

Rhys says he hopes the show can help platform some comedians who are starting out their careers.

Due to the demand to be on the main show, the Comedy Mansion is hosting a smaller show – dubbed the Laundry Room – which will see successful acts join the main event.

The brand is also looking to start a podcast and talk to comedians and stars about their careers.

In March, Mu Mu welcomed Hollywood star Johnny Depp as he filmed for his latest movie.

Camera crews and staff were spotted inside and outside the town centre venue over a two-day period.
