Bystanders said they could see the man “literally hanging off” scaffolding on Brighton Station with “one hand”.
The incident prompted a huge emergency response with fire and rescue, police and the ambulance service all in attendance.
A spokeswoman for Sussex Police said: “At around 5.30pm on Friday (24 April), emergency services responded to reports of a man behaving erratically after climbing scaffolding at Brighton Station.
“Trafalgar Street was temporarily closed. The man was detained and removed from the scaffolding before being taken into the care of healthcare professionals.”
Crowds gathered as the man climbed the scaffolding in what is understood to have been a mental health episode.
