Craig Burke, who represents Pound Hill South and Worth, has left the Conservatives amid claims from group leader Tim Charters that they are “finished in Crawley”.
Cllr Burke was elected to the borough council in 2023.
He said: “Crawley is a town that I care deeply about. I was born here, I’ve lived here all my life, it’s where my family are.
“Being your councillor in Pound Hill South and Worth has been a tremendous honour for me and it’s my belief that I’m better suited to represent you as a Reform UK councillor.”
His defection changes the political make-up of the council to 25 Labour, nine Conservatives, one Reform and one vacancy.
Council leader Michael Jones said: “It’s come as no surprise and just shows that the Crawley Conservatives are in chaos.
“As for him doing the decent thing and calling a by-election, that’s up to him.”
