The plans include construction of a car park, as well as the demolition of existing buildings.
Many residents who live behind and near the proposed site have shared their anger towards the plans.
Today, April 21, they gathered at the site to protest against the application ahead of its discussion at a planning committee meeting, which residents say is scheduled to take place next month.
Emma Russell, 54, said it is the “wrong place” for a McDonald’s and “the council needs to listen” to the community.

She said: “From a planning point of view, the location is really poor.
“We have different schools nearby. There’s a very busy junction, there are a lot of accidents.
“There are health issues. If the kids are coming past they are going to buy the unhealthy food.
“It’s going to be 24 hours with delivery trucks, that’s really noisy for the people that live here.
“I would like to think the council respects people who live in Old Shoreham Road.
“It’s the wrong place for it. I do not know anyone personally who wants it here.
“The council needs to listen.”

Locals also fear an increase in litter, antisocial behaviour and traffic.
Children and adults held signs voicing their opposition to the plans, chanting “Hove against McDonald’s” and “burger off McDonald’s”, while some passing cars beeped in response.
Ms Russell said the group intends to keep up the pressure and “will not give up” in its fight.
The group also held a protest in June last year.

She added that they have been backed by local councillors and Hove and Portslade MP Peter Kyle.
The director of public health for Brighton and Hove City Council recommended the plans be refused in March 2025 due to concerns around the levels of obesity in the city.
The council’s planning team also recommended the drive-through be refused as it is “contrary” to its city plan.
