CityFibre, the UK’s largest independent full fibre platform, is trialling new traffic management technology to reduce congestion during an approximately ten-day road closure in West Sussex.
The closure of Long Furlong in Worthing begins on April 13 and will allow for essential digital infrastructure upgrades as part of the UK government’s Project Gigabit.
To help keep traffic moving, CityFibre is partnering with BUKO Digital to test a system designed to improve driver communication, streamline diversions and ease congestion on surrounding roads.

“Improved communications with drivers will help us to deliver these essential works quickly and safely whilst also ensuring that drivers and residents are impacted as little as possible.

BUKO’s system intercepts satellite navigation services, such as SatNavs and Google Maps, to better distribute traffic across alternative routes.
It also utilises Meta messaging platforms like Facebook to update regular users of affected routes on upcoming diversions.
The technology aims to minimise congestion in nearby communities and make the roadworks more efficient.
The Long Furlong closure supports CityFibre’s delivery of full fibre broadband to hard-to-reach locations, funded by Project Gigabit.
The government-backed scheme aims to bring fast, reliable internet to rural and underserved areas.
A spokesperson for West Sussex Council said: “Long Furlong is a road heavily used by many drivers in Worthing, so we understand the importance of clear communication and efficient works.
“The trial with BUKO Digital should help improve the experience for those affected during the works.”
The BUKO Digital pilot is connected to West Sussex Council’s Lane Rental Scheme, which incentivises delivery partners to complete works with minimal disruption.
The programme is intended to raise the standard of roadworks while prioritising road user convenience.
Project Gigabit is a UK government initiative to extend full fibre broadband to areas that might otherwise be left behind in the digital rollout.
