Two veteran pothole campaigners, who recently held a birthday party for the long-standing pothole on Pevensey Garden in Worthing, have now celebrated a “major victory” after the road was resurfaced.

Former councillor Martin McCabe and town crier Bob Smytherman, both of the Pothole Patrol, gathered in Pevensey Garden on yesterday to celebrate the completion of the long-awaited repairs.

The duo popped the cork on a bottle of Prosecco and toasted what they described as a “huge win” for residents and local campaigning.

Focus was brought on the street after the campaigners highlighted an eight-year-old pothole by throwing it a birthday party – complete with birthday cake – to draw attention to the state of the road.

Martin McCabe described it as “moment worth celebrating”.

“This is a huge win for local residents and for the Pothole Patrol”, he said. “After years of people putting up with a road in such shoddy condition, it’s fantastic to see Pevensey Garden finally resurfaced.”

McCabe continued: “The Pothole Patrol is on a roll and we’re not stopping here – roads should not be left to deteriorate for years before action is taken.

“This is a victory for common sense and proof that when people speak up and keep the pressure on, things can change.”

Bob Smytherman added: “This is proof that persistence pays off.

“The Pothole Patrol will keep campaigning until roads across our area are brought up to the standard residents deserve.”
