It comes as the business’ Annual Financial Statements for 2025 have been published today (March 11).

Revenue saw a 0.2 per cent increase to £1.13bn, which Gatwick says was “driven by diversifying airline mix and greater passenger choice”.

Despite this, profits and passenger numbers were down, figures have revealed.

Gatwick Airport has a drop in profits and passenger numbers

Gatwick Airport saw pre-tax profits fall 7.3 per cent to £422.9 million in 2025, down from £456.4 million the year before.

Passenger numbers dropped by 1.1 per cent to 42.8 million, driven mainly by a 1.9 per cent decline in short-haul traffic.

Gatwick said this was due to “temporary issues related to aircraft availability”.

Pierre-Hugues Schmit, chief executive of Gatwick, said: “London Gatwick delivered a strong performance in 2025, continuing to invest and innovate while driving productivity and efficiency across the business.

“These achievements are underpinned by our commitment to sustainability, and I want to thank all my colleagues for their dedication and hard work across the year.”

The airport did see successes in 2025, with a record number of airlines operating from Gatwick in a calendar year (57), and a new partnership with Jet2 was secured, which kicks off this month (March 2026).

Investment in passenger experience remained a focus, with the completion of the upgraded South Terminal departure lounge and the opening of a refurbished assisted travel lounge.

Gatwick also delivered a new multi-million-pound ‘Next Generation’ security scanner installation.

Despite the fall in short-haul numbers, long-haul markets showed “particularly strong growth.”

Traffic to Sub-Saharan Africa rose by 22 per cent, while the Far East and South Asia saw a 24 per cent increase.

Passenger journeys to the Middle East and Central Asia also grew by 17 per cent.

‘Transformative year’ ahead at Gatwick Airport in 2026

Mr Schmit has said that the year ahead will be a “transformative year” for the airport.

In September 2025, Secretary of State for Transport Heidi Alexander granted consent to bring London Gatwick’s existing Northern Runway into routine use alongside its main runway.

London Gatwick said it is “accelerating detailed logistical planning and design work for its Northern Runway plans”, as it prepares to move into the delivery phase.

The £2.2bn privately financed development is projected to create more than 14,000 additional jobs and generate £1bn per year in economic benefits for the region.

Mr Schmit said: “Our focus on excellent passenger service is unwavering.

“Looking ahead, the development plans for the northern runway detail how we intend to unlock further growth for the airport, our local communities and the national economy.

“I am very excited for 2026, which is set to be a transformative year as we remain focused on making London Gatwick the airport for everyone, whatever your journey.”

In September last year, Gatwick secured UK Government approval to bring its emergency runway into regular use, which will increase capacity by 100,000 flights per year.
