The incident involving a silver Ford Transit van happened on the eastbound carriageway near Chichester at about 5.30am today (March 11).

A 53-year-old man from Portsmouth, the driver of the van, was declared dead at the scene, police said.

“His next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with them at this time,” a Sussex Police spokesman said.

Road closures were in place from Warblington in the west to Fishbourne in the east while emergency services responded. As of Wednesday afternoon the closure was still in place while recovery took place.

Officers thanked motorists for their patience while they responded to the collision.

They are now appealing for witnesses or anyone with information such as dashcam footage in the area at the time to come forward.

The collision happened between sections over Newells Lane and Ratham Lane near Hambrook.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service also attended the incident.

A spokeswoman for the fire service said: “We were called at 5.39am this morning to a road traffic collision on the A27 Eastbound between Warblington and Fishbourne.

“Joint fire control mobilised three fire engines to the scene.

“Upon arrival crews found a van on its roof. Firefighters made the scene safe.

“Sussex Police and paramedics from the South East Coast Ambulance Service were also in attendance.

“Crews left the scene at 7am.”
