Major update to Glasgow Subway trains being tested - UK Daily: Tech, Science, Business & Lifestyle News Updates

SPT, which operates the trains, says new passenger information screens are coming soon, a much-sought-after part of its “modernisation” upgrades.

Announcing the new feature, SPT said: “New passenger information screens are coming soon! They’re currently being tested during nighttime closures and will show the next station your train is approaching.”

The 129-year-old subway is in the midst of a major modernisation effort, with the first of a suite of new trains entering passenger service in December 2023.

SPT is also installing Platform Screen Doors (PSDs) at subway stations, appearing first at Govan with Ibrox and Partick to follow.

Once those are installed across all of the subway’s 15 stations, SPT plans to roll out Unattended Train Operation (UTO) or ‘driverless’ trains.

One customer asked the operator on X if “automated announcements over the tannoy” were on their way, claiming it was difficult to hear the current ones delivered by drivers.

SPT responded to say that they were also part of the planned upgrades for their services.

We reported earlier this week that a teenager has been charged after transport cops received reports of a person allegedly pouring cereal and milk over themselves while dressed as a duck on the Glasgow Subway.

The British Transport Police (BTP) were called to the alleged incident after a video circulating on TikTok showed a man covered in yellow paint with a beak pouring breakfast foods over his head and the carriage.

The alleged incident took place on January 17, 2026.
