An abandoned building earmarked for housing has gone up in flames, just days after the project was signed off.
Swanton House, next to Ashford College in Elwick Road, has been vacant for more than two decades, but is to be replaced by 34 flats across two new blocks up to four storeys high.
Hoardings are now surrounding the prominent building, with demolition due to begin in the coming months.
However, pictures from the town show the property on fire, with thick black smoke billowing from the property.
Fire crews are currently on scene.
It was hoped to the eyesore building would be demolished and rebuilt by next year.
Ashford Borough Council’s (ABC) own property company, A Better Choice for Development Property Ltd (ABCPL), is behind the project.
The council and emergency services have been contacted for comment.
