“Cancel GPT” has been trending across X and Reddit following news that OpenAI signed a major long-term contract with the U.S. Department of Defense.
What might once have been seen as a landmark commercial win has instead triggered a wave of backlash, raising a bigger question – that is, has OpenAI traded public trust for government alignment?
The controversy intensified given preceding reports that rival Anthropic had publicly drawn red lines around military use of its AI, declining involvement in certain areas, including mass surveillance and fully autonomous weapons.
Within hours, OpenAI stepped into the space.
For some users, the optics were immediate, and they were damaging.
A Brand Built On “Safe AI”
OpenAI built its early brand on the promise of “safe and beneficial AI.” That positioning attracted millions of users who believed they were supporting a mission-driven organisation focused on responsible deployment.
Burkan Bur, MBA, Managing Director and Head of SEO at The AD Firm, argues that perception shifted the moment headlines broke.
“OpenAI’s brand was constructed on a promise and the Pentagon contract broke it,” he says. “The perception of the public shifted the instant the headlines hit. And perception, once lost, is exponentially more costly to rebuild than it ever was to gain.”
In AI, switching costs are effectively zero. Users can move from ChatGPT to Claude or Gemini in seconds, because there are no long-term contracts, no proprietary lock-in and no friction.
Burkan warns that losing even a small percentage of highly vocal early adopters could have outsized reputational impact. In his view, movements like CancelGPT are less about mass churn and more about sentiment momentum.
And in the social media era, sentiment compounds quickly – that we know for sure.
Sovereign AI vs Civil AI?
Bob Hutchins, CEO at Human Voice Media, believes this moment marks a broader market split.
He describes OpenAI as being positioned as a form of “Sovereign AI,” embedded within U.S. strategic interests, while Anthropic is emerging as “Civil AI” – a neutral, safety-first alternative.
“For the average user or global enterprise, Cancel GPT isn’t simply about politics,” Hutchins explains. “It’s about losing what they perceive to be their independence.”
And this is really important, because in sectors like healthcare, education and enterprise SaaS, trust and alignment are arguably as important as model performance. If AI alignment is the product, as Hutchins suggests, then moral positioning becomes competitive leverage.
Anthropic may have gained that leverage overnight, and OpenAI just shot themselves in the foot.
The Governance Question
Nik Kale, Principal Engineer in Cloud Security and AI Platforms at Cisco, says the key issue isn’t whether companies take government contracts – it’s transparency.
“The real story is what happened in the 48 hours between Anthropic publishing its red lines and OpenAI signing a deal without publishing equivalent ones,” he says. And it’s a good point.
For enterprise architects evaluating long-term AI vendors, shifting acceptable-use policies raise red flags.
“In this market, the moat isn’t capability,” Kale adds. “It’s the ability to tell your customers exactly what you won’t do – and mean it next week too.”
That point echoes a wider concern: governance clarity. If red lines move depending on who is paying, public confidence erodes.
Major Backlash Or Growing Pains?
Michael Smith, Founder at Buyergain LLC, notes that the CancelGPT movement has generated thousands of comments online, with users openly discussing switching to alternatives such as Claude, Qwen and local models.
At the same time, he observes that some alternatives have faced performance or downtime issues, highlighting a broader reality – the AI ecosystem is still maturing.
Paulo Loureiro Campos, AI Systems Engineer and Founder of Sigma Intelligence LLC, believes the backlash reflects something deeper.
“The CancelGPT backlash is less about the Pentagon contract specifically and more about a broader trust gap that’s been building,” he says. He points out that deploying AI in commercial settings is fundamentally different from deploying it in military decision chains. The stakes change, and so does public tolerance.
But Campos also frames the debate more pragmatically: AI will inevitably play a role in national security. The real question is whether the organisations building it are equipped to govern that deployment responsibly.
Right now, he suggests, many feel like the industry is still figuring that out in real time.
What’s the Bigger Picture for AI
For OpenAI, the Pentagon contract may prove financially transformative, but in a market where trust is currency and switching is frictionless, perception moves faster than revenue.
CancelGPT may fade.
Or, this ordeal may mark the beginning of a deeper realignment in how AI companies position themselves – that is, sovereign infrastructure providers versus independent civil platforms.
What’s clear is this – in the AI era, alignment isn’t just technical. It’s political, ethical and commercial all at once, and users are paying attention.

Someone can move platforms in less than 90 seconds and never turn back, and the CancelGPT movement is proof that a significant segment of that has already passed that point of no return. You’ll notice these tend to be early adopters, developers and vocal members of the community and wield outsized influence on X and Reddit. Brands that lose even 3% of the loudest voices are at risk of up to a 25% decrease in organic referral traffic, in 60 days. That is not a problem of user retention. That is a brand collapse in slow motion.
“Anthropic now owns the principled AI position and they got it for free.
“The type of brand differentiation that Anthropic just received typically costs 15 to 30 dollars million in paid media, influencer campaigns and years of consistent messaging. They went in overnight and got it handed to them. Every one of the users posting a CancelGPT thread and recommending Claude as the alternative are doing Anthropic’s marketing for free. In 20 years of running digital campaigns, sentiment changes like this one once organic compound at about 8 to 12% month over month. It does not mean that Anthropic will always stay in this position. But right now, they are the default recommendation for anybody leaving OpenAI on principle.

“It appears Anthropic wanted to push back against the military using their AI for target designation and mass surveillance.
