Dad suffers second-degree burns as candle sparks devastating house fire in Sidney Street, Folkestone - UK Daily: Tech, Science, Business & Lifestyle News Updates

A dad suffered second-degree burns after a candle sparked a blaze which tore through his three-bedroom home.

The family of Alec Carmichael, 69, say he has lost “many of the things that brought him comfort” following the incident in Sidney Street, Folkestone.

His computer, stereo equipment and personal belongings were destroyed in the blaze on February 22, which has left the property uninhabitable.

Almost £2,500 has been raised to support the father of two, who now needs to attend a specialist burns unit in East Grinstead, West Sussex, for treatment.

His daughter Danielle Carmichael says her dad is “the kind of person who has always put everyone else first”.

“He worked incredibly hard throughout our childhood and never asked for much in return,” she said.

“Even now, he lives very modestly and worries more about others than himself.

“The fire destroyed many of the things that brought him comfort in his daily life. He loved nothing more than quietly sitting and listening to music, something that gave him peace and routine.

“We are incredibly grateful that he is safe and recovering, the fire brigade responded quickly, and friends have helped secure the property.”

Mr Carmichael has lived at the home for more than five years, but the property has been in the family for generations.

He suffered second-degree burns to his hands during the blaze, which was caused by a “briefly unattended” tealight.

Danielle says money raised through the fundraising campaign will be used to replace essential items and get Mr Carmichael back on his feet.

“He does not have house insurance and has very limited savings, which has made this situation especially stressful for him,” she said.

“Instead of focusing on healing from his burns and the shock of the fire, he is deeply worried about the financial impact.

“Any funds raised will go towards replacing essential damaged items and helping restore a safe and comfortable environment for him to return to.

“If you know my dad, you will know he is kind, selfless, and never asks for help.

“More than anything, I just want him to be able to recover without the constant worry about money after such a frightening experience.”
