Officers were called to Bridgegate area of Irvine in response to a death of a man early on Monday, February 23.
Eyewitnesses stated that the nearby Kirkgate car park was cordoned off by police, including specialist officers, for the remainder of that day.
It is understood that Police Scotland remained at the scene until Tuesday, February 24.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: ““Around 6.55am on Monday, February 23, officers were called to the Bridgegate area of Irvine following the death of a man.
“His death is being treated as unexplained and enquiries are ongoing.”
