A police cordon was established on Lewes Road in Ditchling after unexploded chemical munitions were reportedly discovered during excavation work.
The munitions were reported at around 3.25pm yesterday, after which the road was closed and residents evacuated.
Police attended and safely removed the item.
By around 3am this morning, the cordon had been lifted, and residents were allowed to return to their homes, with the road reopened.
Police added that the incident was not terror-related.
A spokesperson for Sussex Police said: “We can confirm that a cordon in Lewes Road, Ditchling, has been stood down, and residents have been allowed to return to their homes.
“This follows a report of unexploded chemical munitions uncovered during excavation work at an address on Tuesday, February 24, at around 3.25pm.
“Officers and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team attended the scene and safely removed the item, and the cordon and road closure has now been lifted.
“We can confirm the incident was not terror-related, and we’d like to thank the public for their patience and understanding while this incident was dealt with.”
