Pictures show a large area of road on Adelaide Crescent, in Hove, which has collapsed.
The section is currently cordoned off and the road closed.
Signage at the closure states construction group, Clancy are undertaking work at the site on behalf of Southern Water.
A spokesman for Southern Water said: “Our engineering teams are fixing a leak on a water pipe at Adelaide Crescent, Hove, this morning (February 21).”
The area has been made safe and works to repair the sinkhole will be reviewed on Monday.

The incident has got many people talking on social media, with one Reddit user sharing an image of the collapsed road.
The user captioned the picture: “Seems like a burst water main eroded up to the road. There was a car stuck in it last night.”
One user responded: “It’s a sinkhole. It’s 10 foot deep at least.”
Another added: “Highway maintenance, gas and water guys all hanging round right now.”
