Paul Thomas Anderson’s politically-charged chase thriller took home six awards, including Best Film, while the Scottish film about the life of Tourette’s campaigner John Davidson won three BAFTAs.

English actor Robert Aramayo was awarded the Leading Actor BAFTA and the EE Rising Star Award for his performance as Davidson in I Swear, which also received the BAFTA for Casting.

“Absolute madness. I can’t believe it,” an emotional Aramayo said on stage.

“I want to thank all the amazing people in Galashiels. I honestly cannot believe I have won this award. Everyone in this category blows me away.”

Meanwhile, Irish actress Jessie Beckley received the award for Leading Actress for her performance as Agnes Shakespeare in Hamnet.

Nigerian-British actress Wumni Mosaku received the BAFTA for Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Annie in Sinners, while celluloid veteran Sean Penn took home the Supporting Actor prize for his role as Colonel Stephen Lockjaw in One Battle After Another.

The thriller claimed another gong, as auteur Paul Thomas Anderson received the Adapted Screenplay BAFTA for his adaption of Thomas Pynchon’s Vineland.

Anderson later received the BAFTA for Best Direction, dedicating his second award of the night to his late friend and assistant director Adam Sumner.

One Battle After Another won six BAFTAs.

Meanwhile, Sinners director Ryan Coogler was awarded first prize in the Original Screenplay category.

Norwegian family drama Sentimental Value won the BAFTA for Film not in the English Language.

Accepting the award, Joachim Trier said it was the first time a Norwegian film had won a BAFTA.

“We live in a time where images are thrown at us at the [fastest] speed possible,” he added.

“The films this year are films which are made for deep viewing, for humanist viewing – so we can gather in rooms like this and [see the] other hopefully through empathy and curiosity and open up the possibilities of the theatrical experience.”

Hamnet, directed by Chloe Zhao, received the BAFTA for Outstanding British Film, while Akinola Davies Jr and Wale Davies took home a gong in the Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer for their film My Father’s Shadow.
