Gleaming taps are guaranteed to make any bathroom stand out, but often water spots and limescale can appear in a matter of hours.

Luckily, there is a solution that promises to keep your taps shining – an unscented candle.

TikTok cleaning influencer Anna Louisa shared her five-minute hack to her 1.2 million followers to show how you can use candle wax to make your faucets look brand new again.

Why does candle wax keep bathroom taps shiny?

Candle wax is hydrophobic, which means it repels water.

A 2017 study published by the American Chemical Society explains how wax coatings create low surface energy, making it hard for water to spread.

So when the water hits the wax, it beads up and rolls off the surface, meaning there’s no time for it to sit and mark the tap.

This is because using wax as a ‘cleaning’ product lays down a fine, invisible barrier on the faucet, causing the water to disappear before leaving a mark.

How to keep bathroom faucets shiny

To carry out this nifty bathroom hack, the business suggests first rubbing an unscented candle gently over your clean, dry tap.

After applying the waxy substance to the fixture, take a microfibre cloth and begin buffing the surface.

Anna said: “Prevent water mark build-up on your taps for longer with candle wax.

“Rub candle wax on your taps and buff it in with a cloth to prevent water marks for longer. The water runs straight off!”

Candle company Florence & Bee said the wax barrier can last for up to a week depending on how much hot water hits the surface.

A Florence & Bee spokesperson said: “Not all candles are created equal. For this, keep it simple.

“You want plain, unscented, dye-free wax. No colours or perfumes—this is important as dyes and scents can carry oils or chemicals that could corrode metal surfaces.

“Soy wax and beeswax are ideal—they’re soft, natural, and easy to apply.

“They spread smoothly and buff well. If you’ve got an unscented soy or beeswax candle lying around, you’re set.

“There’s something satisfying about a tiny job with a big payoff. Using candle wax on taps is one of those little secrets that feels like you’ve cheated the system.

“It’s not a gadget. Not a £20 bottle of miracle cleaner. Just a candle and a cloth.

“And it works because of how nature behaves, how water reacts to wax. The results look great!”

Why should you rub wax paper on your faucets?

If you run out of candles, Florence & Bee also noted that wax paper which most homeowners have in their kitchen drawer, can also work.

To use this product, tear off a square, rub it over the tap, and you’ll get a similar effect.

It won’t last quite as long, but it’s fast and does the job.
