Before the incident, the victim, who was standing with friends, had been approached by three people who appeared to be filming interviews with revellers.

As the group was talking to the interviewer, a man who was part of the trio suddenly punched the victim. He fell to the floor and sustained a serious head injury.

The suspect then took hold of the woman with the camera and quickly led her away, with the man with the microphone also following.

The victim, understood to be in his 20s, had to be taken to a local hospital to be treated for injuries to his face and head.

Police say the suspect is described as being of medium build and around 6ft tall. He was wearing a black jacket with the hood up and light grey jogging bottoms, which had white writing down one leg.

He was also wearing black trainers with white socks.

Officers sealed off part of the high street near the Blue Boar Lane car park, outside Get Ready Comics, following the incident.

Michael Lane, who runs Music Management and Promotions based in the town, says he was heading to a pub in the area when he spotted emergency services responding to an “altercation”.

He says he was told by an eyewitness a man was taken to hospital.

“The ambulance left and police started cordoning off the road with traffic backing up along the high street,” he added.

“There must have been about half a dozen officers.”

Investigators are now keen to talk to the man with the microphone and the woman who was filming.

The man is described as black and he was wearing a puffer jacket, jogging bottoms, trainers and a cap.

All the clothing was black in colour. The microphone was black with a white casing.

The woman who was filming was holding a camera phone with a top-mounted light.

She is described as white with long brown hair, which was tied up. She was wearing a black coat, blue jeans and white trainers.
